If you want to control a population without firing a single bullet, use the mass media to mislead and misinform an uneducated public. This worked well while mass media was effectively in the control of large business interests. Then the internet came along. The internet has developed as a public forum, an information highway for all to use. The barriers of entry are low. As long as one could afford a very low service fee to a local service provider, one has access to a global audience. This low barrier of media entry effectively allows anyone to be a publisher and get their message across to as many users as there are on the internet.

The overhead is extremely small. It guarantees an audience of billions. If your message is popular, the medium is there to spread it effectively. It’s what allowed the Arab Spring and Occupy Wallstreet to happen.
This is a threat to the 1% and they will want to control it if possible. Those who feel so inclined certainly have the capital to do so through mergers and acquisitions.
