A DISCONNECTION BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL & THE COLLECTIVE
On the one hand, we are each individuals inhabiting our own personal environment, surrounded by our own family, friends and unfolding life events. On the other hand, we are also members of a much larger collective; humanity. We are told today that humanity is facing it’s greatest challenge yet; a perfect storm of crisis in economics, energy and the environment which threatens our very survival. If global warming is real, there may be so much momentum already set in motion that it is too late to do anything except deal with the consequences coming our way. However, if there is still a chance, we must all act collectively and quickly.
There has been a crippling dysfunctionality in our relationship between ourselves as the individual human in our familar personal environment and as members of the greater collective of humanity. The apathy which this disconnect creates is something we can ill afford now, given the magnitude of the problems we face.
That huge gap critically depends on our quality of education. Science is the accumulated knowledge of humanity. It establishes very certain conclusions based on patterns the naked eye cannot see. If we have not been educated to understand the science, mathematics and economics, however, we are incapable of seeing these patterns. We can never appreciate the magnitude of the problem which science is telling us. Global Warming is not something we can directly see. We can’t directly see an increased amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. To the average person, the atmosphere looks no different than it did many years ago. It is only through scientific instruments and studies that we can detect these patterns.
Education is therefore more important than ever so that we will not be misguided by false information and be properly motivated to take the appropriate action that leads to the greatest welfare of all beings.
A DEEPER DISCONNECT
If we explore deeper, we may find that this separation goes even further. There is a disconnect that begins as soon as we are born. Parents, through no fault of their own begin to condition their children into the language and thinking native to their culture. This deep conditioning begins the process of forming within the newborn child the mental framework of a separate being. The education of language and analytic thinking are necessary in childhood development; they are skills that are essential in order to function in a modern society. Yet the deeper this training, the further the child moves away from the nondual state at birth. Wonder is neither explicitly recognized nor intentionally taught to our children. And so children travel down the journey of their life, with no explicit guidance to maintain the sense of wonder and awe of the state of pure awareness which they began life with. Parents who naturally have it will pass it on, those who don’t have no recourse but to not.
Modern life’s destruction of the sense of community and family life has contributed significantly to the dramatic reduction in life education. Mothers and fathers both work, there are many divorced and separated parents and grandparents are shipped off to old age homes. All of these combine to isolate children from a close-knit community that is so necessary for feeling cared for and for keeping the spark of wonder alive.
Children develop and grow up with a progressively more alienating view of reality. With age, there is an increasing emphasis on the development of egocentricity. The distortion begins to manifest as early as the age of young children. Attitudes of separation begin to manifest as strong desires, possessiveness and self righteousness. This lay the foundation for creating the three conceptual categories of friends, enemies and strangers used later on in life. These categories and analytic thinking in general condition the mind to see the world as separate instead of wholistic. One particuliar harmful effect of this is that it allows us to justify causing both personal and social suffering to enemies and strangers. Unhealthy individual attitudes collectively form unhealthy societal attitudes which lead to all the ills of society.
THE DANGERS OF HIGH TECHNOLOGY AND LOW MORALITY
The danger of high technology in the hands of a person who does not live from a view of wholism is like putting matches in the hands of a child. Technology can easily be misused to amplify and accelerate suffering that comes out of morally bankrupt decisions; the more powerful the technology, the greater, faster and more deadly the suffering we can inflict. Our problem as a society is that our technological development has outpaced our moral and spiritual development. If our vision is one of a peaceful and equitable society where there is happiness for all, we must balance out our children’s education.
Transforming Self, Transforming World
Society is a very abstract concept. Our everyday reality is one of our own community of immediate family, friends, coworkers and acquaintances. When we have not yet recognized our own limitless potential and don’t yet experience life as sacred, we will very easily find suffering within our own communities. Adding up all these communities around the world gives us a world filled with suffering. It is only within our own microcosm that we have the opportunity to learn what it means to experience the sacredness of life and of all beings. When we have learned that lesson with those in our community, then we can apply it to every community and the world at large.
People make this artificial division between their own personal transformation and the larger collective social transformation
- David Loy
Our personal lives are a micocosm of the larger societal universe. If we haven’t found the wisdom and compassion to live in peace in our own personal lives, there is little chance we will be effective in healing the larger social collective. Too often, people leave broken homes unhealed, carrying with them anger and fear. Joining a social movement with such unhealed anger and fear will only poison that social movement. Our vision is to bring about personal transformation first in order to bring about proper peace-centered social transformation.
We must rediscover holistic view that sees the interconnectedness of all phenomena and ground ourselves in wisdom, not beliefs. For:
When we believe, we walk in the shadow of knowledge
when we know, we walk in the shadow of wisdom
but when we are wise we shine light upon those who know and believe.
Today, knowledge is disconnected and fragmented. Knowledge without compassion is dangerous yet all-too-common. It’s widespread practice has resulted in the world we live in today, one where inequities are growing rather than diminishing. Industrialization is the result of knowledge which is disconnected from awareness of other beings or the environnment. It’s success has left us with an attitude of controlling nature, rather than coexisting with it.
Technology is one of the most powerful forces shaping modern society, but when it is disconnected from wisdom to guide it, it becomes as dangerous as a car driven by a drunk driver. Technology can really hurt us. The artificial separation of heart and mind has lead to alienation between ourselves and other living beings, to the environment and to life itself. In an age when our combined technical knowledge makes it theoretically possible for all to lead happy lives, our lack of holistic wisdom keeps us tethered to a world of great inequity and suffering.
Our vision is to champion a business ethos that is in harmony with a holistic way of living which includes:
1. LIFE IS SACRED
We have lost our sustainable world because we have lost our holistic view. To create the sustainable world we want, we must rediscover this holistic view.We aspire to create a truly sustainable and just society, one which every citizen of this planet yearn for. Yet we will never achieve this as long as our priorities are backwards. How do we reverse our priorities? The world has not able to find effective solutions to the many social problems ailing it because it continues to use the same approach, one that is missing a crucial element…..the individual’s vivid appreciation of life itself. InGienous Design’s basic operating philosophy is the conscious awareness of the sacred nature of each and every moment of life. There is a bridge between personal and social transformation; the authentic discovery of the sacredness of one’s life is the starting point for all sustainable social solutions. The recognition of the sacredness of our own life will lead us to naturally value that of others. Establishing authentic compassion is the bridge between our own welfare and the welfare of others and links our personal transformation with society’s. It is this authentic compassion which will protect our social, technological, scientific an analytic solutions from the vulnerabilities of greed, aversion and indifference that normally bring about entanglement and failure.
2. HAPPINESS & WELL BEING COMES FIRST
Money is not an End, but merely a means to an End; the End is always happiness. In our present corporate environment, for many people, money is embraced as the top priority and happiness second. In fact, money is seen as the road to happiness. As author David Loy points out, however, the diversion of humanities energy into any of money, power, fame, materialism is due to a fundamental fear of death, a denial of death. At the root of humanities destructive tendencies is therefore a spiritual vacuum.
As a result, we can easily condone actions that cause unhappiness as a side effect of doing business. When we realize authentic happiness both of ourselves and others is the first priority, and money is only a distant second, then we will be incapable of bringing unhappiness to others in the course of doing business. InGienous Designs acts within a new paradigm in which the convention of money takes its rightful place below that intangible quality we call happiness. We operate on the principle that money is only a means to an end; not an end in itself….The end is always authentic happiness for all beings.
3. THE KEY TO UNLOCKING HUMAN POTENTIAL
The re-connection to the sacred will unlock boundless potential energy. This awareness will energize us and free up enormous reserves of innate compassion and creativity…resources which are necessary to create the individual greatness required of each of us to build humanity’s future. Unfettered compassion will provide the required ultruistic motivation while creative wisdom will provide the required nonlinear solutions to the multitude of vexing challenges facing humanity today.
We realize that purely technological solutions are not enough; we must also undergo a paradigm shift of human values. In all the projects we undertake, InGienous Designs promotes the reintegration of spirit, heart and mind to bring back a holistic view to the design and implementation of technology in our world. Hence, InGienous Designs works in synergistic areas such as human potential to help us see and maintain a sacred view, education to teach it and media products to promote it.
