James Burke, science & technology historian narrated and produced his acclaimed BBC TV series Connections decades ago but it still stands as a gem of in the history of science and technology, blending humanity with science to vividly bring discovery and invention to life.

Burke illustrates the holistic and integrated nature of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEMs) and human culture. Through his research methodology of tracing a ubiquitous modern day technology back to its origins, he demonstrates that each such invention arises in an organic way that is interwoven into the fabric of human culture itself. As one watches the series, one cannot help but see the completely unexpected connections between a series of historical events and also between ideas that occur in an individual mind and how seminal ideas propagate outwards from that mind into our entire society. Each episode shows that behind each major technology we experience today, lay a fascinating story of an idea whose time had come.

Burke’s series is a must-see for anyone in the field of STEMs education. Invention and discovery are exciting human endeavors and Connection shows what our children must experience in order to inspire the next generation of innovators.
