The double stress of increasing human demand for water and global warming is threatening the freshwater security of almost half the planet. Aquifers are being overpumped and water cannot recharge the aquifers faster than they are depleted. Areas such as India and China have a double threat because the glaciers they depend on for water are also dissappearing rapidly due to global warming.
